Increasing the load resistance
Piston pins
Piston pins

The piston pin - only a small part for MAHLE, but one which plays a major role in the performance of an engine. To meet the requirements of ever greater ignition pressures, it is essential to permanently optimize the load resistance.

The MAHLE piston pin program
MAHLE piston pins are distinguished by the highest quality, precision and application variety. The product range comprises diameters of 6 to 250 mm. For use in passenger car engines, piston pins are formed by MAHLE using state-of-the-art multi-stage presses - in this way, innovative and complex forms can also be realized for greater load resistance. For motor racing engines subject to extreme loads, piston pins are produced from nitrided steels with a PVD coating. At the same time, chromium nitrided layers increase the protection at increasing temperatures.

New materials and forms for even greater load resistance
In the course of ongoing development of the MAHLE MONOTHERM® pistons made from forged steel, the MAHLE piston pins are also examined with respect to innovative forms and materials. New pins and boss geometries, as well as profiled piston pins and profiled pin bores, pin bore recesses and horizontal oval pin bores promise a considerable increase in the load resistance.

Tests which leave nothing to chance
With components subject to heavy loads, such as piston pins, materials testing and quality control provide the key to greater component robustness and eliminate the risk of engine damage. MAHLE has therefore invested a great deal in test processes in this area - and will continue to do so. State-of-the-art test stands ensure that parts are not only theoretically validated, but can also be validated and released by physical bench tests. At the same time, this satisfies the high quality requirements of the automotive industry.
