Ancient Greek and Roman Studies majors explore the history, language, literature, art, culture, customs, and religion of the broader Mediterranean world across the millenia.

This interdisciplinary major offers a broad range of course options, ranging from archaeology to mythology. We also teach Latin and ancient Greek languages at the introductory and advanced levels.

However you choose to approach your degree, you’ll learn to connect the past to every aspect of today while building incredibly valuable skills. After all, the classics are the classics for a reason!

Cultural Experiences

Dig into the past on short-term, faculty-led trips, such as Archaeology of Greece. Spend a semester in Italy during the JCU in Rome program, where you’ll stay and study in the heart of the city.

Program Overview & Outcomes

A major in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies at John Carroll builds strong thinking, writing, and speaking skills — excellent preparation for any career, as well as graduate study.

Students in this major will learn to:

  • Communicate skillfully and effectively in both English and either Greek or Latin
  • Interpret features of the culture of the ancient Mediterranean (such as art, literature, and customs) in the context of its history, politics, religion, or geography
  • Demonstrate emerging cultural competence

This major is incredibly flexible. You'll have a chance to choose from one of three concentrations. Perhaps you want to focus on mastering ancient languages? Or maybe you want to dive deeper into art and literature that has shaped generations of creative thinkers.

    Introduction to Greek history through consideration of primary sources (e.g., historical documents, material culture, or literary texts). Topics may focus on a period or theme in Greek history between the Bronze Age and incorporation into the Roman empire. Offered Fall.

    Introduction to Roman history through consideration of primary sources (e.g., historical documents, material culture, or literary texts). Topics may focus on a period or theme from the Roman Republic and/or Empire.

    Power&identity-Roman Republic

    Examines Roman identity in the last centuries of the Roman Republic, as Roman power expanded to encompass most of the Mediterranean. Topics include social structures and power relationships within Roman society; interactions with cultures from outside Rome; and the civil war between Octavian, Antony, and Cleopatra. Cannot be repeated if taken as CL 302 or CL 2810. Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent.

    Greek and Roman comedy and tragedy, with special attention paid to the tragic and comic hero, staging, and the role of performance within Greek and Roman culture. Distribution: CAPA.

    Homer And The Epics Of Troy

    An introduction to the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. Includes the origin of the epics in the pre-literate transmission of myths about the Trojan War; the impact of oral composition on the epics’ poetic structures and storytelling techniques; the themes of mortality, honor, homecoming, marriage; and the importance of storytelling itself. Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent. Co-requisite: HS 2214.

    The Archaeology Of Greece

    Study of the major archaeological sites of Greece from the Bronze Age through the classical period. Attention paid to the development of Greek material culture (including architecture, sculpture, and pottery) and its relationship to Greek history. May include a study tour in Greece. Focus on the institutions and historical figures that have been prominent in the shaping of the city and its history. Highlighted by a one-week, on-site learning tour of Rome during spring break.
