Ancient Greek and Roman Studies majors explore the history, language, literature, art, culture, customs, and religion of the broader Mediterranean world across the millenia.
This interdisciplinary major offers a broad range of course options, ranging from archaeology to mythology. We also teach Latin and ancient Greek languages at the introductory and advanced levels.
However you choose to approach your degree, you’ll learn to connect the past to every aspect of today while building incredibly valuable skills. After all, the classics are the classics for a reason!
Cultural Experiences
Dig into the past on short-term, faculty-led trips, such as Archaeology of Greece. Spend a semester in Italy during the JCU in Rome program, where you’ll stay and study in the heart of the city.
Student Involvement
JCU is home to 100+ student organizations, some which may especially appeal to Ancient Greek and Roman Studies majors, such as the history club, Italian club, society of philosophy, and pre-law society.

A major in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies at John Carroll builds strong thinking, writing, and speaking skills — excellent preparation for any career, as well as graduate study.Students in this major will learn to:
- Communicate skillfully and effectively in both English and either Greek or Latin
- Interpret features of the culture of the ancient Mediterranean (such as art, literature, and customs) in the context of its history, politics, religion, or geography
- Demonstrate emerging cultural competence
